Catherine Maloney – PHMS Director of Bands

Catherine Maloney graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She earned two Bachelors degrees in Music Education and Media Studies, Communication. Catherine began her career in San Antonio, TX with the Northside ISD as the assistant director at Stinson Middle school. Upon her return to the midwest, Catherine took over as the head director at Pendleton Heights Middle School. Over the last 11 years, the PHMS Band program has grown steadily and continues to maintain a high level of achievement in performance. The top two concert bands and jazz band consistently earn Gold ratings at ISSMA events, along with several students participating in the IBA All-Region and Madison County Honor Bands. Catherine has also served as an adjudicator for IMEA Solo & Ensemble and ISSMA Organizational Contest at the middle school level. Outside of teaching, Catherine is an active performer in the community. She plays in the flute section with the Indiana Wind Symphony and serves in the US Army National Guard 38th ID Band in Indianapolis. Catherine is looking forward to new responsibilities in her career, to include being commissioned as Warrant Officer and new Bandmaster/ Commander for the 38th ID Band. She resides in Fishers, IN with her husband, Dan and daughter, Clara.

Nathan Hochstetler – Assistant Director PHHS/PHMS

Nathan Hochstetler is currently in his 12th year of teaching music. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Ball State University. This is his seventh year as the assistant director at Pendleton Heights High School and Middle School. Prior to his time at Pendleton, Mr. Hochstetler spent five years as the director at Alexandria-Monroe Schools during which the band program grew considerably. His students regularly perform in honor bands, ISSMA events, and the Pendleton Heights Jazz Festival. He is an active member of the Indiana Music Educators Association and is a regular attendee of both the IMEA State Conference and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic.

Outside of school, Mr. Hochstetler plays the trumpet in several ensembles, including The Directors Jazz Orchestra and Alpha Brass. He is a partner of 48Entertainment, a company that provides DJ and live audio services. Mr. Hochstetler enjoys biking, woodworking, and spending time with his wife Rachel, their 5 year old daughter Maizen, their 2 year old son Leland, and their two dogs Eden and Otis.
